No trip to Lake Bled is complete without a ride on a pletna — the traditional wooden boat found only here. With calm strokes, the oarsman takes you across the emerald lake, just as it’s been done for centuries.
As you glide over the water, the view of the island church grows closer. There’s a special kind of silence — just the sound of the oars and your thoughts.
On the island, climb 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption. Ring the legendary wishing bell, explore the chapel, and take in the peaceful energy of this magical place.

This isn't a group tour with a flag and a fixed schedule.
It's a private, immersive experience for your group only —
up to 7 people — guided by someone who has spent years
learning not just the history of this place, but its soul.
Inside Bled Castle museum, most guides walk past a small
brooch in a glass case. I stop there. It's a peacock —
the symbol of Bled, and before that, an ancient symbol
of immortality. I tell guests its story, and the room
goes quiet in a way that rarely happens on a tour.
Next to the museum entrance grows a vine — planted in
2004 to mark 1,000 years of the castle. One thousand
years of the same rock, the same lake, the same sky.
Standing next to it, guests suddenly feel the weight
of that number.
A long time ago, a young woman lived in Bled Castle
with her husband. Robbers came and killed him. She
grieved so deeply that she melted down all her gold
and silver jewellery to cast a bell for the little
island church — so its sound would carry her sorrow
across the water. But on the night the bell was
being rowed to the island, a storm rose and the boat
sank. The bell disappeared into the lake. The widow,
broken-hearted, left for a convent in Rome. The Pope,
moved by her story, cast a new bell and sent it to
Bled. That bell still hangs in the Church of the
Assumption today. We call it the Wishing Bell —
and they say if you ring it three times and make a
wish with a pure heart, it will come true.
At my private audio stations inside the castle, I give
each guest a pair of headphones. They close their eyes
and listen — the legend of the bell told as it was
meant to be heard, with the sound of the Avsenik brothers'
music underneath. Guests who have travelled across
thirty countries tell me this is the moment they
remember most.
And at the end of the tour, before we drive back to
Ljubljana, I always stop at Slaščičarna Zima —
a small pastry shop where locals actually eat, not the
cafés by the lake that charge tourist prices. The
kremšnita here is better and costs less. I have never
had a guest who didn't agree.
I end every tour with a poem. Not mine — I found it
somewhere and kept it because it says what I never
quite manage to say myself:
They don't say much, they don't rush by,
they live beneath the lowest sky,
the soup is sacred, and coffee means
that moment's mine.
That's what I want my guests to take home. Not just
photographs of a lake — but the feeling of a place
that slows you down.
