Why This Is the Best Day Trip from Lake Bled

Most visitors to Lake Bled stay within a 30-minute radius — Vintgar Gorge, Bohinj, maybe Ljubljana. Very few make it over the mountains into the Soča Valley. That's exactly why it's worth going.

On this private day trip from Bled, we drive north through Kranjska Gora and begin the ascent of the Vršič Pass — Slovenia's highest mountain road, built by Russian prisoners of war in 1915 during World War I. 50 hairpin turns. 1,611 metres above sea level. Views of the Julian Alps that most tourists never see.

Then we descend into a completely different world — the Soča Valley, where the river runs in colours that don't look real. Turquoise, emerald, and something between the two that doesn't have a name. We follow the river south through waterfalls, gorges, and WWI history, all the way to the alpine town of Bovec before turning back toward Bled.

This is Slovenia's greatest scenic drive. I know every stop, every viewpoint, and every story along the way.

Tour Itinerary:

🌊 Peričnik Waterfall — our first
stop after leaving Bled. Peričnik is one of the most
unusual waterfalls in Slovenia — you can walk behind
the curtain of water on a rocky ledge. The lower fall
drops 52 metres; the upper fall is hidden above the
forest. In winter it freezes into a wall of ice.
In summer the spray keeps you cool on even the hottest
days.

🏔️ Lake Jasna — a small glacial lake at the foot of the mountains just below Kranjska Gora, with the sharpest reflections of the Triglav range you’ll find anywhere. There’s a bronze ibex statue on the shore — the symbol of Triglav National Park — and the water changes colour through the day from grey-green in the morning to vivid turquoise by noon.

⛰️ Vršič Pass — 50 Hairpin Turns — the centrepiece of the day. We drive the Russian Road (Ruska cesta), built in 1915–17 by 10,000 Russian prisoners of war who were captured on the Eastern Front. More than 300 of them died here in an avalanche in March 1916 — there is a small Russian Orthodox chapel at hairpin 8 that marks the spot. We stop at the summit viewpoint where on clear days you can see all the way to the Adriatic. The descent into the Trenta valley on the other side is 26 hairpins through dense forest — a completely different character from the open alpine slopes above.

💧 Velika Korita — Great Soča Gorge — where the Soča River squeezes through a narrow limestone canyon that in places is only 2 metres wide but 15 metres deep. The water here is so clear you can see the riverbed even in the deepest pools. The wooden walkways above the gorge give you views straight down into the turquoise current. This is where the Soča reveals what makes it unlike any other river in Europe.

🌊 Boka Waterfall — the highest waterfall in Slovenia at 106 metres, visible from the road as a white ribbon falling from the cliff face above the valley. After heavy rain or snowmelt it becomes one of the most powerful natural spectacles in the Alps. We stop at the viewpoint for photos before continuing to Bovec.

🏘️ Bovec — the main town of the
Soča Valley, surrounded by mountains on three sides
and the river on the fourth. We stop here for lunch
(not included) — there are excellent riverside
restaurants serving local trout, grilled meats, and
Slovenian wine. Bovec is also the centre of adventure
sports in the Soča Valley — rafting, kayaking,
canyoning — if any of that interests your group,
let me know when booking.

🌿 Kozjak Waterfall — a hidden gem
that most day-trippers miss because it requires a
15-minute walk through the forest. Kozjak falls into
a small emerald grotto — a cave-like pool surrounded
by moss-covered rock. It’s quiet, cool, and completely
different from every other waterfall we see today.
A final gift from the mountains before we turn for home.

🌉 Napoleon Bridge — built in 1750
and later used by Napoleon’s armies during the French
occupation of Illyria. The original stone arch still
stands above the turquoise Soča, framed by the
mountains behind. One of the most photographed spots
in the valley and our last stop before the return
drive to Bled.
