Closest isn't always cheapest. Klagenfurt, Trieste, Treviso, Venice and Zagreb all serve Bled too. For some travellers, a cheaper flight into one of them beats flying to Ljubljana. The cheapest flight is rarely the cheapest trip
Flight search engines compare flights. They don't know what the road from the airport costs — and that road runs from €65 to €449, depending on where you land.
Here's the arithmetic that catches people out. Take a family of four flying from the UK in June:

On flights alone, Treviso wins by a wide margin. Once the transfer is added, Klagenfurt wins, Treviso and Ljubljana come close — and Ljubljana saves nearly three hours each way.
Two things follow. The transfer is priced per car, not per person — €65 from Ljubljana is €65 whether there are two of you or seven. The more of you there are, the less the transfer matters, and the more the flight price decides the outcome. Time is part of the price too: Treviso to Bled takes 2h 45 each way; Ljubljana takes 30 minutes. That's over four hours of the holiday, spent on a road, in both directions.

Which airport should you fly into?
Flying from the UK or Ireland
Ljubljana has direct flights from London Gatwick and Luton with easyJet, and from London Heathrow with British Airways (routes and frequencies change by season, so check current schedules). If nothing suits, Klagenfurt is the strong second: 55 minutes from Bled, and Ryanair flies there from London Stansted when Ljubljana fares climb. Venice rarely pays off from the UK — you'll spend the saving on the road.
Flying from the United States or Canada
No direct flights reach Ljubljana from North America; you'll connect through Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Zurich, Istanbul or Paris. Fly through to Ljubljana if the connection works. If it doesn't, Venice Marco Polo is the usual alternative — it takes the most long-haul traffic, and the drive to Bled runs three hours through the Friuli plain and over the Karst. Many of my American guests treat that drive as day one of the holiday.
Flying from Germany, Austria or Switzerland
Klagenfurt is 55 minutes away and usually the simplest choice. Munich, Vienna and Zurich all connect to Ljubljana too. Driving instead? Slovenia requires a motorway vignette — €16 for a week in 2026 — and Austria requires its own.
Flying from Italy
Trieste is the closest Italian option, at 1h 45, and it's consistently overlooked. Treviso and Venice are cheaper to fly into from most Italian cities but add an hour or more each way.
Flying from Croatia or the Balkans
Zagreb is 2h 15 away. The border crossing at Obrežje can add 30–45 minutes on July and August weekends — worth it if you're combining both countries, not worth it otherwise.
Arriving at night or before 6am
Choose Ljubljana. It's the only one of the six where a 30-minute drive puts you in bed within the hour, and I drive at any hour with no night surcharge.
1. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik (LJU) — 30 minutes, €65
Slovenia's main airport, at Brnik, 35 km from Bled and beside the A2. It's small — one arrivals hall, one exit — so you clear it within ten minutes of landing. Half an hour of motorway follows, with the Julian Alps on your right the whole way; on a clear day you'll see Triglav before Kranj.
Airport taxis here are metered and run €80–120 depending on traffic and hour, so a €65 fixed transfer usually costs less as well as removing the guesswork. A public bus exists, but it runs infrequently and most journeys need a change.

Just across the Austrian border, closer than most people expect. The road runs through the Karawanken Tunnel — motorway the whole way, no mountain passes. The tunnel toll (about €8.20 in 2026) is already in the price.
Watch this airport when Ljubljana fares climb: Ryanair flies here from several UK and German cities, and the extra 25 minutes of driving is often worth a large saving on the ticket. Flying from outside Slovenia and Austria, you'll often find better fares landing in Italy or Croatia. Trieste is closer than most people assume; Treviso and Venice are the Italian long-haul options; Zagreb suits a two-country trip.

The most overlooked option on this list. Trieste sits closer to Bled than Venice, the motorways run well, and fares from Italian cities are often the cheapest of the six. If you're already in Italy, start here.

Fixed price agreed before you travel, door to door, any hour. I meet you in arrivals with a sign, track your flight, and wait if you're late. The cheapest option from three people up; for a couple it costs more than the bus but saves about two hours.
Airport taxi — €80–120, 30 minutes
No booking needed, but the meter sets the price, and it isn't cheap. You'll usually pay more than a booked transfer, and you won't know how much until you arrive.
Bus — from about €10, 1.5–2.5 hours
The budget choice if you're travelling light, alone, and landing mid-afternoon. Services run infrequently and most journeys need a change; early or late flights may have no service at all. Check the current timetable before relying on it.
Hire car — from about €40 a day plus fuel, tolls and parking
Worth it if you're touring Slovenia for a week. Not worth it if you're staying at Bled — you'll need the €16 vignette, the lakeside car parks fill by 9am in summer, and everything around the lake is walkable.

What is the easiest way to get to Lake Bled?
Fly to Ljubljana, and have someone meet you. Thirty minutes after you clear the doors, you're at the lake, luggage in the boot, without working out a timetable in a language you don't read. If a flight to Ljubljana doesn't exist or doesn't suit, Klagenfurt is the next easiest by a clear margin.
Is it better to stay in Lake Bled or Ljubljana?
It depends what you came for — here's the local answer, not the diplomatic one.
Stay at Bled for the lake and the mountains. Bled itself is small — you can walk round the lake in ninety minutes — but it's the base for Vintgar Gorge, Bohinj, the Vršič Pass and the Soča Valley, and the early mornings before the coaches arrive are why people fall in love with it.
Stay in Ljubljana for a city break with a day trip. It's a genuinely good small capital, with restaurants and nightlife Bled doesn't have, and Bled is an easy day trip from it.
Doing both works well: two or three nights in Ljubljana, then three at Bled. Fly into Ljubljana, spend the city nights first, and take the transfer up to Bled when you move — it costs the same €65 from the city as from the airport.
